Subject: Technology at IT’S Time

I purchased your high efficiency condensing gas boiler in 2013. I was concerned at the time the technology may not be ready for prime time and my experience has backed up my concern.

Below is a history on my boiler, I have concluded if I followed your technical team’s advice, my cost of ownership would be double or triple compared to normal boiler cost (see my analysis below). I have been dealing with these issues for almost 2 years now!!

The boiler trips to error mode, mostly when running hot water / heat simultaneously and there is an outside temperature or condition change. During the winter months, the system errored into non-running mode 6-8 times a month. It concerned me when leaving the house unoccupied for an extended length of time. Three different HVAC experts have looked at the system and spoken to your technical team (case # 359893) without finding a solution. The system can work for weeks without issue and then BANG! The last recommendation was to replace the control board, but it was not a guaranteed fix. I declined based on the following analysis.

Initial Purchase cost: Rinnai E110CN boiler install = $8,200. May 2013.
Recommended solution cost: $3,800. Control unit replacement.
Projected 20-year total cost of ownership: $16,900.

So, WHAT AM I TO DO? I spend this significant amount of money with the comfort that in 5 years when the warranty expires I replace the control board again?

I owned an oil burner previously for 20+ years and could count on it continuously during its life. I am NOT there with your high efficiency boiler!!

My question to you is: Am I the only customer who has had this experience? I would like to hear from you before I publish my “Cost of Ownership” analysis on your boiler.
